Minor hockey goalies can face more uncontested high-danger looks than professional benchmarks typically assume due to erratic defensive coverage and wide-open cross-crease passes. Because of this, NHL benchmarks can give coaches a misleading read on youth-goalie performance.
Use this quick-reference guide to get a sharper read on how your goalie handles the most dangerous recorded chances:
Minimum sample: Benchmark reads require at least 20 recorded high-danger shots against in the selected filter. Below that threshold, HDSV% remains visible as a preliminary result, but no performance tier is assigned.

>=.800 [Elite / Top-Tier]: Game-changing high-danger results. The goalie is repeatedly giving the team extra margin on odd-man rushes, back-door plays, and clean slot shots.
.740 to <.800 [Good / Strong]: Strong and reliable across the selected sample. The goalie gives the team a strong chance by stopping roughly 3 out of every 4 high-danger breakdowns.
.680 to <.740 [Average]: The central Stats Beaver reference range for competitive youth hockey. High-danger chances convert more often in minor hockey, making this a practical coaching starting point.
.650 to <.680 [Watch Area]: Just below the competitive average band. This is not automatic panic territory, but it deserves attention as the sample grows.
<.650 [Below Average]: The goalie may be struggling with depth, lateral recovery, or tracking cross-crease movements, allowing prime scoring chances to convert at a concerning rate.
Isolate the Quality to See the Real Story
An overall game save percentage of .885 can look weak on a standard box score. However, if your data shows the goalie faced 20 high-danger shots and stopped 17 of them (.850 HD SV%), the high-danger result is strong despite the weaker overall number. Use that signal alongside game video and the quality of the recorded chances.
